How to Sign Up for Medicare Part D?

Signing up for Medicare Part D can feel overwhelming, but understanding the basics makes the process easier.

What is Medicare Part D?

Original Medicare (Parts A & B) does not cover prescription drugs. Medicare Part D is the optional coverage that helps pay for both brand-name and generic medications. You can enroll in either:

  • A stand-alone Prescription Drug Plan (PDP), or

  • A Medicare Advantage Plan (MAPD) that includes drug coverage.

Who is Eligible?

You qualify for Medicare Part D if you are:

  • Age 65 or older and a U.S. resident (with at least five continuous years of residency).

  • Under 65 with a qualifying disability.

  • Any age with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD).

Note: U.S. citizens living abroad are not eligible until they return to the States.

What Drugs Are Covered?

Medicare Part D covers FDA-approved medications used for medically necessary purposes. Each plan has its own formulary (list of covered drugs), organized into cost tiers. While all plans must cover a wide range of prescriptions—including six “protected categories” like antidepressants and immunosuppressants—specific coverage and costs will vary.

Why Enroll Early?

If you don’t have other prescription drug coverage and delay signing up for Part D, you could face a late enrollment penalty. Reviewing plans early ensures you get the right coverage at the best cost.
